Testing and assessments planned require set-up and organization. In order for us to properly plan, you must tell us now that you plan to be a part of this camp, and which days you plan to attend. You will benefit most by attending all sessions.
Following is the schedule for the camp. Please be on time for all sessions, and arrive with proper clothing and equipment, plus water and snacks.
Durango Whitewater
Early Fall Athlete Assessment Camp
October 6 - 8, 2007
Objective:
- Testing/assessment of various components related to performance in whitewater slalom using repeatable and measurable methods.
- Design of off-season training to address areas needing improvement.
- Leading to athlete execution of training, and keeping of records/training log and future re-testing/assessment through off-season.
Schedule:
Sat Oct 6
8 a.m.: Meet at 3301 East 4th Ave, Durango.
- Bring paddling clothes (for flatwater, including lifejacket), dry clothes, snacks, water, money for lunch en route back to Durango or sack lunch, plus all other paddling clothes (including helmet) necessary for p.m. Smelter session.
- Combine into cars to carpool to Farmington Reservoir
a.m.: Flatwater testing, Farmington Reservoir
- Warmup and initial assessment: paddling on edge, paddling with one blade, glide capability, and paddling in reverse; canoes, all on on and off-sides.
- Flatwater tests
- Short sprints: ~10”, best of 3
- Lactic sprints: ~ 45”, best of 2
- Seven-minute test: Distance covered in 7’ as laps on measured course
p.m.: Whitewater gate assessments, Smelter course
Sun Oct 7
8 a.m.: Durango Rec Center, dry land tests (athletes responsible for entry fee) wear gym clothes and running shoes. Bring jacket.
Tests include: Pullups, pushups, dips, plank, and ball work.
Immediately followed by run test at Durango High School Track.
~noon: technique session at Smelter gates
Review of results
Mon Oct 8
a.m.: Smelter technical and performance work
p.m.: Downriver race in slalom boats, 32nd to 4Corners. Shuttle organized, runs timed.
- Registration is mandatory, and you must be a member of USACK in order to participate.

- Cost: You pay only your entry fees to the venues we use. These are estimated to be less than $20/athlete.
- Coaching is provided by the Durango Whitewater Center of Excellence and USACK.
